Each type of vegetable has different varieties that have been delveloped over the years.
There is a big trend at the moment to grow heirloom varieties. These are basically garden favorites that have been grown, tried and tested for years. This is what separates supermarket varieties from those sold at farmers markets and those grown in backyard gardens. Heirloom varieties have survived because they have the best flavor or are the juiciest rather than because they are a perfect shape, travel well or last the longest in a coolroom. If you want to grow cucumbers that are a foot long or store watermelons through winter I’ll try to help you out. Eventually I hope to have an entry for each type of vegetable and discussion on how to grow it and the varieties to choose.
